The Construction Industry is a major economic force in the State of Israel. Every year billions of Shekels are spent for new buildings, roads, water and sewage systems and additional areas of building and construction. The expansion of construction in the South of Israel in recent years is expected to continue in accordance with the Master Plan for development of the region. This plan calls for an investment of the order of 10 billion dollars and a population of about 400,000 people in the South, in the coming years.
The degree program in Civil engineering of the Sami Shamoon College of Engineering is meant to answer the need for more Civil engineers in Israel and particularly, in its South. The program emphasizes both theoretical and applied knowledge of design, management and execution of building projects. It is meant to prepare the graduate so that he/she can upon graduation, accept the full responsibilities of an engineer with the briefest period of training.
The study program has been designed to train the graduate in accordance with the needs of the work place. The first year of studies is devoted mostly to basic engineering courses. The second aims at extending the subjects of the first year, and in focusing on engineering planning. The third year is devoted to areas of planning, management and execution of projects. The fourth year focuses on a major senior engineering project, and in expanding the knowledge of the student on special areas of engineering.
Throughout the study program there is a major emphasis on software packages that are essential for the modern building engineer in every area of his work. This includes software for Static, Construction Planning, Road Planning and Field Work, Engineering Measurement, Engineering Drawing, Project Management etc. To gain both theoretical and applied knowledge, the student will carry out experiments in laboratories of physics, engineering measurement, materials sciences, strength of materials, building materials, fluid mechanics, soil mechanics and roads.
The student may choose either of two specializations: Building Engineering, and Building Supervision.
Graduates of the program are eligible for listing in the Engineering Register for Engineers and Architects
Studies take place only at the Beer Sheva Campus.
The application for granting the B.Sc. Degree has been submitted to the Council for Higher Education.
